My book, The Last Place You’d Look: True Stories of Missing Persons and the People Who Search for Them ((due out in April from Rowman & Littlefield) covers cases like that of Keith Call and his date, Cassandra Haily. Call and Haily were on their first date and enjoying the scenery of the Colonial Parkway in Virginia when the two college students disappeared. Their empty car was later found parked and abandoned on an overlook.
Investigators believe the pair were slain and that their deaths are connected to those of six other young people, all killed in the same general area. All were murdered in pairs. Those killings took place over a two-year period that began in 1987. Some have theorized that the serial murderer may have had an accomplice and that the killer or killers may have passed themselves off as cops. Known as the Colonial Parkway Murders, crime scene photos of the cases surfaced recently, bringing the case back to the forefront of the news.
